March is Women’s History Month and to kick it off, I decided to discover some wine made by WOMEN! It’s amazing because it’s not too often you hear about many lady wine makers, so naturally I was ecstatic to attend this event!

Deep Roots Wine Market held the Women Behind The Wine Event on International Women’s Day and it was perfect! The atmosphere was amazing inside this market, with wine bottles surrounding you, you have no choice but to indulge and get lost in the stories behind the brilliance of the winemakers. It was my first time visiting and certainly won’t be the last!

As soon as my friend and I walked in we were pleasantly greeted and provided a guide for the Women Winemakers and the wines themselves. We traveled to each station and tasted several delicious wines. Honestly thinking back to the experience, I don’t believe there was a wine that I didn’t enjoy! From Cabs to Chards to Merlot it was a wine party in my mouth and here’s the best part; the tasting was FREE! It was open house for the Women Behind The Wine!

My two favorites of the day were:

1. Gallo signature Chardonnay made by Gina Gallo

2. Paradigm Cabernet Sauvignon made by Heidi Barrett

Now the Gallo name sounds familiar doesn’t it? It’s our favorite large bottle to purchase under $10! But this special edition Gallo Chardonnay is made by wine pioneer Julio Gallo’s granddaughter Gina Gallo. Wine making is in her blood and it shows! This Chard was smooth with medium acidity and not very buttery, as some may dislike! On the nose there was green apple, olive oil, and vanilla. On the palate the feel was medium bodied, more refreshing than a typical Chardonnay, with a short finish. Flavors of green fruits and olives were also present. It was damn good!

I didn’t get a back story on the Paradigm Cab, but here are my tasting notes: On the nose were pepper and herbs. On the palate it was dry but not overly tannic, full-bodied, with a taste of black currant, earthy, smooth long finish, and heavy on the tongue. I loved it!

Of course there were several other wines there that were just as delicious such as J wines by Judy Jordan. I’ve had this wine many times and it never has disappointed! Their wines pair well with appropriate foods, as my first taste of J Wines was during South Beach Seafood Fest in Florida. You can’t go wrong with Judy’s wine!

Here is the list of all of the phenomenal women winemakers! I plan to make it my business to discover more women in wine in the future and naturally I’ll tell you just how they taste!

Deep Roots Wine Market also has other wonderful products such as accessories and these amazing granite Charcuterie boards. I couldn’t resist, I had to have one for my kitchen and private wine tastings I host! Needless to say my friend and I enjoyed ourselves and will be returning VERY soon! All of the wines mentioned can be purchased at Deep Roots Wine Market. The location is about 45 mins just north of Atlanta. There are also many restaurants and homegrown local shops to enjoy in this walking territory, so visit and and make a day of it! When you do, please tell them Aviana @ Wines and Words sent you! Happy Women’s History Month! CHEERS!
